THE XHTML NAMESPACE

In writing an XHTML document, you must include an announcement of the XHTML namespace immediately after the XHTML DTD declaration. The namespace definition basically imports a complete set of HTML-like tags for you to use in applying formatting and other design rules to your documents. In XHTML, the namespace declaration appears as an attribute of the tag that opens the document, like this:
