A schema—database, XML, or otherwise—specifies the structure and content of data. For the most part, the XML Schema Recommendation provides mechanisms for validating distinct datum (via simple types) and the structure of data (via complex types).

This chapter describes how to build applications that work with XML schemas by using MSXML, the Microsoft XML Core Services.

Rachel Heery and Manjula Patel [1] define application profiles as schemas which consist of data elements drawn from one or more namespace schemas, combined together by implementors and optimised for a particular local application.

Castor uses a configuration file for environmental properties that are shared across all the Castor sub systems. The configuration file is specified as a Java properties file with the name castor.properties.

Designing XML documents through DTDs (document type definitions) or schemas, as described in last month's column, might be necessary. It might even be fun, but it is probably more efficient to avoid reinventing the wheel.

Shema examples.

The following schema objects are used in the OraObject and OraRef examples. Data for the following tables can be inserted with the ORAEXAMP.SQL script that is provided with the OO4O installation.

CREATE SCHEMA will enter a new schema into the current database. The schema name must be distinct from the name of any existing schema in the current database.

Schema Evolution is the process of assisting and maintaining the changes to the schematic information and contents of a database.

The files under Examples are probably the best place to start to explore.

This section describes the SQL Database Schema used by the Rocks system. The free MySQL DBMS server manages the schema in a single database named cluster.

They have different name and body objects in the schema libraries which refer to
their different functions.

The new schema language defined by the W3C, XML Schema, is used in a number of applications, such as Web Services and XQuery, and will probably be used by an increasing number of users in the near future. Currently, XML Schema's data model, the "XML Schema Components", can only be represented in the rather verbose XML syntax defined in the XML Schema specification itself.
