World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WEBDAV): An Introduction1
Today the typical use of the World Wide Web is to browse information in a largely readonly manner. However, this was not the original conception of the Web; as early as 1990, a prototype Web editor and browser was operational on the Next platform, demonstrating how Web content could be read and written. Unfortunately, most of the world never saw this editor/browser, instead developing their view of the Web from the widely distributed text-based line mode browser. When NCSA Mosaic was developed, it improved the line mode browser by adding a graphical user interface and inline images, but had no provision for editing. As Mosaic 2.4 reached critical mass in 1993-4, “publish/browse” became the dominant model for the Web.

How To Access Files Using WebDAV
WebDav is an industry-standard protocol for reading and writing files over the Internet. It was defined by the IETF in the mid-1990s and is not platform specific, which makes it useful for getting to files of one platform from a different platform. It uses HTTP[S] as its transport protocol, which makes it particularly useful for accessing files across a firewall.

Three quarters of Microsoft-IIS sites have WebDAV enabled
On 17th March Microsoft issued a security alert regarding a buffer overflow vulnerability which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code on Windows 2000 machines. The vulnerability is triggered by the Microsoft-IIS/5.0 implementation of the World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) protocol and is specific to Microsoft-IIS/5.0 - WebDAV was not supported in Microsoft-IIS/4.0, and Microsoft-IIS/6.0 is reported to be unaffected.

WebDAV Command Beans
WebDAV Command Beans leverages the functionality of Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol (WebDAV), which is as easy to use as the JavaBean components. This set of Beans is mainly targeted for application developers that want to create custom applications. They also contain tools for content management and support all types of content, documents, images, and objects.

WebDAV in 2 Minutes
The stated goal of the WebDAV (DAV) working group is (from the charter) to "define the HTTP extensions necessary to enable distributed web authoring tools to be broadly interoperable, while supporting user needs", and in this respect DAV is completing the original vision of the Web as a writeable, collaborative medium.

WebDAV
As a Course Designer, you'll find it much easier and quicker to manage your course files by using WebDAV, an Internet Standard that allows for simplified file management with remote Web servers. WebDAV overcomes the single-file transfer limitations of WebCT's File Management module by allowing you to drag and drop into and out of the "My_Files" area of your WebCT course(s).

Connecting to a WebDAV Server
DAV Explorer uses the WebDAV network protocol to perform operations on a WebDAV server. DAV Explorer only displays a listing of local files until it is given the URL of a collection on a WebDAV server. Once it has been given this URL of a collection on a WebDAV server, and a login name and password have also been provided if necessary, DAV Explorer lists the resources located on the WebDAV server.

Web Authoring with WebDAV
Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) extends the HTTP/1.1 protocol to allow clients to publish, lock, and manage resources on the Web. This section describes how to set up a WebDAV publishing directory on an IIS server, and how clients can connect to the server to edit and manipulate files.

Versioning Extensions to WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning)
This document specifies an Internet standards track protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the "Internet Official Protocol Standards" (STD 1) for the standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.

DAV (distributed authoring and versioning)
The Internet Engineering Task Force's Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV or WEBDAV) protocol is intended to provide a standard protocol for uploading files to a server, with various advantages over something like FTP. The same working group also has various other draft protocols in the works, for example the Versioning Extensions.

WebDAV
Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (RFC 2518) defines the HTTP extensions necessary to enable distributed web authoring. WebDAV provides a network protocol for creating interoperable, collaborative applications, making the Web a collaborative, writable medium. The basic purpose of WebDAV is to provide file I/O through HTTP. This permits you to load, edit, delete, create subdirectories, and basically manage files located on the Web Server from the client desktop.

Web Folders & WebDAV
"Web Folders" is what Microsoft calls its WebDAV support, which is built into modern Windows operating systems. WebDAV is an open Internet standard that allows clients on your PC or Mac to access files and folders on a server in much the same way as on the desktop, while actually residing on a remote server accessed via the Web — in this case the server is My Docs Online.

WebDav Services
Allows users of applications such as Adobe Photoshop to access content and services provided by Documentum without additional system integration. WebDAV Services makes the Documentum repository transparent to WebDAV applications but without compromising Documentum security, access control, lifecycles, workflows, and other capabilities. With WebDAV-based access, application users can only access content and services that they're authorized to access.

WebDAV Overview
WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a standardized set of extensions to the HTTP protocol (the basis of the World Wide Web) that allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote Web servers. WebDAV has widespread vendor support in the industry and is used with many browsers, editors, file systems, document repositories, and databases. The use of a WebDAV enabled client (such as xmlspy® 2004) in conjunction with a WebDAV enabled server changes the way users interact with the World Wide Web. While today the Web is largely a read-only resource, WebDAV has the potential to transform the Internet into a fully writeable medium capable of supporting collaboration and distributed file sharing.

What is WEB DAV?
Web DAV is a protocol that allows convenient connectivity between a remote server and local workstation. Web DAV can now be used with WebCT 3.8 to provide true "Drag and Drop" file transfer capabilities.

WebDAV
WebDAV is an XML based protocol, it defines a set of new methods (PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, MKCOL, COPY, MOVE, LOCK, UNLOCK) and a set of new headers (DAV, Depth, If, Destination, ...). A good overview of WebDAV: WebDAV in 2 minutes

What is Catacomb?
Catacomb is a WebDAV repository module for use with the Apache WebDAV module, mod_dav. Apache mod_dav parses WebDAV and DeltaV protocol requests into operations on a repository providing persistent storage of resources and their properties. The default repository for mod_dav is provided by a separate module, mod_dav_fs, which stores resource bodies as files in the filesystem, and stores properties in a (G)DBM database.
