IBM plans to spice up its content management software with XML technology that makes the storage and retrieval of corporate documents quicker and more flexible.

Dave Sullivan, of Zonar, spoke about the limits imposed by existing DTDs and schemas upon XML's ability to encapsulate data and allow for its optimal use by existing data systems. Using his work for realtors as an example, Sullivan made clear the almost unlimited number of qualifiers you could have for any element. He gave as an example: a house, a house with a ceiling fan, a house with a ceiling fan by a specific manufacturer.

XyEnterprise, a leading developer of XML content management and enterprise publishing software, announced today that company revenues for the second calendar quarter ending June 30, 2004, grew 45 percent as compared to the same quarter in the prior year. Quarterly revenue for the company's XML software products more than doubled year over year. These numbers reflect sustained quarter-to-quarter product sales growth, significant new customers, expansion of solutions for existing customers, and the company's third consecutive profitable quarter.

I was trying to understand why I was being told that the implementation of iXMLSerializable in DataTable and DataSet in 2.0 is responsible for all of the xml goodies (readxml/write/etc and of course all the webservices stuff) when DataSet in 1.0 and 1.1 does not even implement iXMLSerializable, yet still manages to do all of these things.

The XML Schema Working Group has released the First Public Working Draft of XML Schema 1.1 in two parts: Part 1: Structures and Part 2: Datatypes. The drafts include change logs from the XML Schema 1.0 language and are based on version 1.1 requirements. The Web3D Consortium and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW) today announced the formation of a working group to develop a binary file format encoding for X3D(R), the open standard for communication of real-time 3D data, which is now in the final stages of ratification by the International Standards Organization (ISO). The X3D Binary Format working group is chartered to develop both an encoding of X3D to enable advanced compression of 3D data to shorten the transmission time of models and scenes across a network and a data encryption scheme to protect sensitive model information.

This document describes use cases for evaluating the potential benefits of an alternate serialization for XML. The use cases are documented here to understand the constraints involved in environments for which XML employment is currently problematic because of one or more inherent inefficiencies in XML 1.x. Desirable properties of alternate XML serializations to address the use cases are derived and discussed in a separate publication of the XML Binary Characterization Working Group (XBC WG).

The Automating Equipment Information Exchange (AEX) Project management has announced the public release of Version 1.0 XML schemas for the exchange of information about capital facilities equipment and operations. The schemas cover both project and technical information, and "are designed to be used to support multi-party collaboration work processes for the entire life cycle, including design, procurement, delivery, installation, operations and maintenance of facility equipment."

In an update to a developer’s guide on using Extensible Markup Language, the Navy’s CIO office will advise program managers to stay clear of proprietary XML extensions. The Navy “is mindful that many vendors add customizations to specifications, in an attempt to build market share,” said Robert Green, who is the lead for XML Interoperability and Standards team for the Navy CIO office. Unfortunately, such customization “leads to proprietary implementations and expensive middleware solutions.”

IBM said it is using XML to make Web and digital content easier to find in repositories.

Informed by the company’s years of experience with mission-critical XML deployments, the XI50 is another industry first and a milestone in DataPower’s application oriented networking strategy.”

IBM on Monday extolled the value of open standards as it revealed plans to expand Web services, XML, and Java interoperability in the next version of its DB2 Content Manager.
