XSL-FO is a XML standard. Documents of this format are transformed by renderers into other formats like PDF, RTF, HTML, Postscript, PCL or other. There is a growing set of open source projects and vendors providing XSL-FO formatting and transforming tools. See resource-section for some useful links.

We have deeply reworked our XSL FO stylesheet for XMLSpec 2.0. In its current version, it provides a reasonably nice coverage of five W3C papers: XML Spec, XML Namespaces, XSLT, XPath, and - finally - XSL FO Draft (the last one). XSL is a language for expressing stylesheets. It consists of three parts: XSL Transformations (XSLT): a language for transforming XML documents, the XML Path Language (XPath), an expression language used by XSLT to access or refer to parts of an XML document. (XPath is also used by the XML Linking specification).

The XSL Formatter from Antenna House has been released in version 3.0, incorporating "an entirely new formatting engine developed from scratch." The XSL Formatter V3.0 application implements an XSL-FO (Extensible Style Language-Formatting Objects) processor meeting the specifications of the W3C XSL Recommendation. As noted above forrest provides already an document-xml to xsl:fo stylesheet. As this stylesheet already assumes document-v11 xml documents, some minor changes was made to transform document-v10 to xsl:fo.

Dynalivery announced today the addition of an XSL-FO input module to the Saffron Document Server. Saffron acts as a "virtual printer" implemented as an all-Java server. FOP is the Apache hosted Open Source product that can be used to render documents marked up in XML to multiple rendering formats. The output formats include PDF, PCL and text.
