XSL:FO Design with Altova StyleVision
Altova® StyleVision® includes the world's first visual XSL:FO designer to automate the writing of XSL:FO stylesheets through an intuitive, drag-and-drop user interface. Presenting data from XML applications and relational databases in PDF format is a common requirement in report generation and document management systems. Writing intricate XSL:FO stylesheets for transforming XML and database content to PDF format becomes easy with the robust visual editing capabilities of StyleVision. You can create your design, view the resulting XSL:FO stylesheet, and view the PDF output – all in the same user-friendly window. In addition, your single design simultaneously produces an Authentic form, as well as HTML and Word/RTF output and the associated stylesheets.

XSL-FO - What's that?
XSL-FO is a XML standard. Documents of this format are transformed by renderers into other formats like PDF, RTF, HTML, Postscript, PCL or other. There is a growing set of open source projects and vendors providing XSL-FO formatting and transforming tools. See resource-section for some useful links.

Stylesheets for XML Recs/WDs
We have deeply reworked our XSL FO stylesheet for XMLSpec 2.0. In its current version, it provides a reasonably nice coverage of five W3C papers: XML Spec, XML Namespaces, XSLT, XPath, and - finally - XSL FO Draft (the last one). At Renderex you can find the stylesheet with more comments, plus XSL FO versions of each of the above documents, and PDFs generated by our renderer.

The Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL)
XSL is a language for expressing stylesheets. It consists of three parts: XSL Transformations (XSLT): a language for transforming XML documents, the XML Path Language (XPath), an expression language used by XSLT to access or refer to parts of an XML document. (XPath is also used by the XML Linking specification).

The Extensible Stylesheet Language Family (XSL)
An XSLT stylesheet specifies the presentation of a class of XML documents by describing how an instance of the class is transformed into an XML document that uses a formatting vocabulary, such as (X)HTML or XSL-FO. For a more detailed explanation of how XSL works, see the What Is XSL page.

Moving From XML to Print: O'Reilly Releases "XSL-FO"
No matter how flexible and convenient digital information has become, we haven't yet done away with the need to see documents in print. But many XML users, whose focus is on creating high-quality digital source documents, find that formatting the printed output often comes as an afterthought. O'Reilly's latest release, XSL-FO by Dave Pawson (US $34.95), explores one method by which developers and web designers can convert XML to print. Extensible Style Language-Formatting Objects, or XSL-FO, is a set of tools used to describe page printouts of XML (including XHTML) documents. If you need to produce printed material from your XML documents, then XSL-FO can provide the bridge.

FOP is the first of its kind which produces commercial quality print output with XSL formatting objects.
