GXL - Document Type Definition (DTD)
GXL has been developed to be an open standard. No licensing or other legal arrangements are required for its use, whether commercial and non-commercial. The specification of GXL is copyright by its authors, to allow control of its evolution. The specification can be reproduced and used without charge, but with explicit acknowledgement of its authors.

eXtensible Markup Language (XML) Document Type Definition for Dublin Core Simple
The following is a Document Type Definition (DTD) for use in Cross-Domain Retrieval using the XML Record Syntax. This DTD does not address qualified Dublin Core elements.

The NeXus XML Meta-DTD Format
We are in the process of formalizing the definition of NeXus files using XML. The hierarchical structure of NeXus files maps very conveniently into XML files with NeXus groups and items as the XML entities, and data attributes as XML attributes. Eventually, we intend to provide utilities to read NeXus files, produce the equivalent XML file, and use standard validation tools to help people determine whether their files are standard-conforming.

DocBook: A DTD for Documentation Sign up for XML IN PRACTICE
Undoubtedly, you've heard about the benefits of managing your data with XML: data will be reusable across multiple applications, tools that understand XML will make your life easier, content producers and presentation specialists will be able to work independently, and so on. Does this really work, or is it just hype?

Report DTD
Several support files are necessary on your local computer to parse a document tagged according to the Technical Report DTD. These are listed on the previous page. Note: use the downloading instructions listed at the beginning of this page for downloading the files listed here.

The Cougar Document Type Definition
This is a snapshot of the Cougar DTD. This is work in progress, subject to change at any time. It does not imply endorsement by, or the consensus of, either W3C or members of the HTML working group. Enclosed are six components which you can extract for use with tools such as James Clark's nsgmlsu which is available as part of the SP package from http://www.jclark.com/sp/index.htm You will need the Unicode version as Cougar uses Unicode for the document character set.

W3C XML Specification DTD (“XMLspec”)
Following is information on the sources of analysis input, the design principles governing the markup model, the implementation principles governing its expression in DTD form, and outstanding issues.

Document Type Definition (DTD)s, Schemas & Namespaces
The Document Type Definition (DTD) defines the valid syntax of a class of XML documents. That is, it lists a number of element names, which elements can appear in combination with other ones, what attributes are available for each element type, etc. A DTD uses a different syntax (namely Extended Backus Naur Form) from that used by XML documents.

Class DTD
The representation of an SGML DTD. DTD describes a document syntax and is used in parsing of HTML documents. It contains a list of elements and their attributes as well as a list of entities defined in the DTD.

How To: Why not use a simple DTD or XMLSchema description?
The simple answer is because they are not sufficient frameworks. For example, lets say that two different schemas need to be used. One to represent basic information about a document, such as keywords and another a list of people who have approved the document. The basic data structures of RDF, in this case a bag, can be used in both cases. Without RDF, the data structure and how to represent it in XML would have to be described in each schema, potentially in a different way making the metadata more difficult to process.

DocBook - DTD (official) branch
DocBook is an XML/SGML vocabulary that enables you to create document content in a presentation-neutral form that captures the logical structure of the content. Using the DocBook stylesheets, you can publish DocBook content as HTML pages and PDF files and other formats, including man pages, HTML Help, and JavaHelp.

DTD's
There are several types of DTD's. The only browsers they have any effect on are the new millennia browsers. They do not work on older browsers such as Netscape 4, IE4, IE5, or IE5.5, with the exception of IE5 for Mac.

Sample XML DTD and Boolean Searches
InitRequest and response, a Boolean search which results in zero records, another search that results in one record followed by a PresentRequest for that record, another search that results in four records followed by a PresentRequest for one record and another request for all four records.

DTD/Schema
This page contains links to the codebook DTD, including information on the various versions of the DTD, its structure, and other information on how it can be used. The "view" link below enables you to view an HTML marked-up version of the DTD, while the "download" link will enable you to download a compressed version of the DTD.

Writing A DTD for An XML File
You can validate an XML file with a document type definition (DTD). DTDs use a formal grammer to describe the structure and syntax of compliant XML documents; they specify content and values allowed for the XML document. You define the DTD of your XML file in its DOCTYPE declaration. The DOCTYPE declaration can either point to an inline DTD or can be a reference to an external DTD file.

Requirements for Localizable DTD Design
When creating DTDs it is important to include constructs that meet the needs of the localisation community, and that enable documents produced using the DTD to be successfully rendered in another language and / or locale. This document sets out to list the key requirements in this regard. It will be used to provide a framework and direction for a detailed solution proposal (or set of proposals) to be developed later. The concepts in this document apply equally to schemas developed with XML Schema or similar languages.

Structure of the TEI Document Type Definition
This chapter describes the overall structure of the encoding scheme defined by these Guidelines. It introduces the conceptual framework within which the following chapters are to be understood, and describes the technical means by which that conceptual framework is implemented. It assumes familiarity with SGML or XML; see chapter 2 A Gentle Introduction to XML.

CyberNeko DTD Converter - Default branch
NekoDTD is a configuration that parses Document Type Definition (DTD) files and converts the information into an XML document. This representation can then be processed using standard XML processors and applications to perform grammar analysis, convert the DTD into other grammar formats, etc. The current version of NekoDTD can expose DTD information using DOM or SAX, has the ability to "flatten" DTD files, and can convert existing DTD grammars to XML Schema and Relax NG.
