The Internet and the World Wide Web have dramatically changed the way companies can do business. E-business, or business processes conducted over the Internet, has seen a dramatic increase in just a few short years – but there is still a long way to go especially for small and medium business use of the internet. Application of electronic information standards and supporting Internet technology are redefining business process on an unprecedented scale and pace. One set of standards which are enabling this evolution, some might say revolution, is the XML (Extensible Markup Language) family of standards. The Electronic Business Extensible Markup Language (EBXML) a joint project from UN/CEFACT and OASIS heavily uses XML, Public Key Infrastructure, and other internet standards to promote cost effective products for small, medium and large organizations.

Today, or in the very near future, I could be vacationing on a beach in Sri Lanka logged back into my system in Chennai, India, which is connected to the Internet provider in Singapore. At the push of a few buttons, I might be able to purchase an item from my favorite designer store in Toronto, Canada. The purchase might be authenticated in real time by my wife somewhere in Boston using her cell phone. The goods may actually ship from Malaysia to my next intended destination in Indonesia.

ebXML (Electronic Business XML) is a project to use the Extensible Markup Language (XML) to standardize the secure exchange of business data. Among other purposes, ebXML would encompass and perhaps replace a familiar standard called Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). ebXML is designed to enable a global electronic marketplace in which enterprises of any size, and in any location, could safely and securely transact business through the exchange of XML-based messages.

Short for electronic business Extensible Markup Language, a modular suite of specifications for standardizing XML globally in order to facilitate trade between organizations regardless of size. The specification gives businesses a standard method to exchange XML-based business messages, conduct trading relationships, communicate data in common terms and define and register business processes.

This slide divides the ebXML family into specs for design-time features of services (BP, CC, CCP/CPA, Reg/Rep) and runtime features (TR&P). A business service interface, derived from a CPA, enables services to consume and produce ebXML-compliant messages, even if those business services and applications themselves are proprietary.

(Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language) A set of XML specifications for business data. A joint initiative by technology standards body OASIS and UN/CEFACT, the United Nations' electronic business unit, ebXML was created to prevent fragmentation of electronic commerce into multiple incompatible XML dialects, and to provide a migration path for existing users of EDI, the UN's pre-Internet e-commerce standard. It also provides for business process collaboration using BPSS (Business Process Specification Schema).

Some implementations may require that ebXML messages be Encapsulated into the payload of another ebXML message in a recursive fashion. This might be needed for encrypting a message where the headers need to be included in the encryption with the payloads. This might be useful when an intermediary node needs to add a payload to an existing message without disturbing a signature. This might also be used to break very large messages, or messages with large numbers of payloads, into smaller pieces for transmission (how this is done is outside the scope of this specification).

Doing business electronically became quite the vogue in the late 1990s, as the idea captured the attention and imaginations of everyone from business and political leaders to individual consumers. To most people, the term electronic business (or just e-business) meant having to develop a presence on the Web, sometimes with a sound business strategy and execution, but many times just to keep up with consumer expectations and competitors. In 1999, Time Magazine named Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, as its Man of the Year, joining such notables as Charles Lindberg and Martin Luther King, Jr. The technology dazzled and the possibilities seemed endless.

When Sun Microsystems acquired Forte, one of the people who made the transition was Ed Bratt, who had been responsible for Forte's EAI business process integration product. Today, as development manager for Sun ONE Business Integration Products, Bratt is keeping close tabs on ebXML and how it fits into the Sun ONE infrastructure.

I am now officially old enough to witness technology recycle itself. The first two years of my career were spent as a business analyst for an EDI standards committee for the railroad industry. The railroads never got enough participation from each other and progress was slow. However, exchanging EDI messages to track a customer shipment would have added business value. Rather than a customer having to phone every railway to track his shipment, he could receive EDI messages informing him of his shipment’s location throughout the trip plan.

The standardization of electronic business Extensible Markup Language (ebXML) also promises to revolutionize the way companies partner and conduct business. The initiative, sponsored by the standards bodies United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) and Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), has produced a modular suite of XML specifications that enables enterprises of any size or location to conduct business over the Internet.

After examining the basic blocks with Universal Business Language and XML Common Business Language, what else is missing for electronic business? A whole lot more is incorporated into Electronic Business XML, ebXML for short.

"Implementing ebXML" provides the focus for a new conference sponsored jointly by OASIS and UN/CEFACT in Barcelona, Spain on 23 May 2002. Highlighting the growing use of ebXML in a range of industries as well as ebXML's role in Web services, the one-day conference will be held in conjunction with IDEAlliance's XML Europe 2002 show.
