This document defines the OpenTravel Alliance’s Best Practices Guidelines for all of OTA’s XML data assets. OTA approved message specifications released prior to version base 2001C may not follow the guidelines defined in this document. However, the approval of any OTA specification to be released with version 2001C (or beyond) will be based on how well it complies with OTA’s Best Practice Guidelines.

The OpenTravel™ Alliance held its annual Advisory Forum in Northbrook, Illinois on September 16 & 17. Among the features of this conference were its industry experts and in depth analysis of the travel industry and the great progress OTA has made as a technological leader in the development of XML specifications in the industry. One group trying to make heads or tails of this technological jumble is the OpenTravel Alliance (OTA), an organization developing connectivity standards by leveraging the near ubiquitous access to the Internet.

The OpenTravel Alliance has been working on an XML specification (tags, DTDs, infrastructure etc.) for use across the widely-defined travel industry since May 1999. Several political, organizational, and technical challenges had to be overcome to enable it, working with its over 100 member organizations (airlines, hotel chains, travel agencies, Global Distribution Systems, software companies, companies with large numbers of ‘managed’ travelers, etc.), to publish Version 1 of its specification for public review in February 2000. The challenges and the solutions to them are discussed.

The OpenTravel(TM) Alliance (OTA) published Versions 2001B and 2001C of its Extensible Markup Language (XML) specifications, which help all sectors of travel communicate more efficiently and effectively by simplifying the implementation and transmission of complex electronic transactions.

The OTA WAP Settings module is used for remote configuration of WAP devices. Configuration of any type of techincal devices are mostly considered difficult. To simplify the configuration of WAP devices, Ericsson and Nokia created a unified way to configure their WAP devices.

The 2003A release enhances messages previously released and introduces three new message pairs, 2 for the Hotel Industry and 1 for the Travel Insurance Industry. Also new in 2003A, additional business scenario and instance documents have been added to the text section of the Specification. These were added to assist those companies in the implementation process.

This is a service provided to the OTA community allowing for the automatic generation of generic OTA_UpdateRQ messages. The underlying engine which drives this service is part of the VM Tools package available via open source from VM Systems.

In the coming months, OTA will complete work on two specifications, supporting such cross-industry norms as the ebXML infrastructure and SOAP messaging. Additionally, OTA will release for public review in spring 2002 a specification that will become the foundation for all future messaging in the travel industry.

This class generates and applies OTA update requests. If given two pieces of OTA data, it will generate an update request that will show the differences between the data. If given a piece of OTA data and an update request, it will apply the update and return the modified data.
