I like RSS, But I Have Reservations
Many people have noticed that the web is growing in total size (as measured in the total number of pages). Very few people have publicly noticed that the web is also growing in effective size, because people are reading more web pages.

Building a Semantic Web Site
Even though the Semantic Web may yet seem a remote dream, there are already tools one can use to make a tiny step forward by building "semantic web sites," which can be much easier to navigate than ordinary sites. In this article, I will discuss how RSS 1.0 and its taxonomy module can be used as a central format to carry metadata collected in a classical news format, such as XMLNews-Story, to RDF or relational databases and XML Topic Maps. Readers should have basic familiarity with RSS and RDF, and a little topic maps knowledge would also help.

Public information blogs will grow web services
Not surprisingly, the State of Utah has a large amount of data and much of it is public. Some of the data that holds the most interest to people is already available on our web site for searching. For example, you can verify the validity of a professional license. My plan is to enable web services by ensuring that anytime we make data available we do it in a way that produces at least XML and that URIs work for all queries (yes, RESTian principals are at play here).

SK2.0 Help: About RSS
In addition to straight HTML presentation, SK2.0 web and newslogs can be syndicated in the increasingly popular Really Simple Syndication (RSS) format. The SK2.0 database manager generates an automated RSS compatible XML summary of user/subscribers' news and weblog whenever the content is updated. The address of the user's RSS summary can be found in the Account Manager generated at registration.

Pssss... Have You Heard About RSS?
We are going to let you in on the ground floor of an exciting, not so new technology... No this is not a get-rich-quick scheme; it is more like a get-informed-quick strategy. This technology, "RSS," allows you to choose specific sources of information from the Internet, and then efficiently review the latest published information, events, data, and writings from hundreds of sources you select to monitor. It is very much a "pull" rather than a "push" technology.

RSS and XML (could) make my world both larger and smaller in one stroke, a remarkable achievement
OPML lets me produce a list of feeds I regularly read. OPML also lets you produce a list of feeds you regularly read. Now, imagine a few thousand people, all with published OPML formatted feed lists. Within that, there is likely to be some overlap...someone else could be subscribed to a great deal of feeds I'm subscribed to. More importantly, they are subscribed to a few I've never heard of.

Setting up my weblogs is complete
About two weeks ago, while working on one of my websites hosted by Site Build It!, I wanted to create a weblog for maintaining current information about telecommunications. While it is possible to create a weblog, of sorts, using Site Build It, it wasn't what I'd become accustomed to using Radio Userland or News Pro. I decided it was time to investigate the state of the art concerning RSS and syndication, and that led me to the newest version of Radio Userland and the replacement for News Pro, Coranto. Both are heavily invested in RSS and XML and it was time to do some updating and building of new infrastructure before I could make progress on my original goal.

NewsGator - RSS Viewer inside MS Outlook!
NewsGator (which has nothing to do with the evil gator.com) is a news aggregator for Microsoft Outlook. It gets those RSS and XML feeds from those blogs and news sites you read everyday (*cough*webfroot*cough*) and displays them just like emails. It's US$29 after the 14-day trial, but it's just such a great idea, and if Microsoft decide to build a news aggregator of their own, I hope they do it this way.

FAQ: About XML feeds / RSS Syndication
RSS is a defacto XML standard invented by Netscape for news distribution, now adopted by thousands of sites. RSS is an open format that uses a simple set of XML tags to define a news “channel” that allows any site to provide basic meta-information about your new content (headline, link, description). Others can fetch your RSS file and display your news stories, driving traffic your way. Need to know more about using RSS and XML files on your site? Check out Jonathan Eisenzopf’s Using RSS News Feeds tutorial. OS X users looking for a good RSS reader should try NetNewsWire. It’s our favorite.

Integrating Internet Content
Just as much of the Internet sprang from grass-roots efforts, so grass-roots technologies for information management and delivery have become important tools for librarians to enhance service to their users. One now-mature technology is RSS, which provides web sites and web-based services with a way to disseminate simple bibliographic information about their content.
