Introduction to RSS Feeds
Syndicated news feeds are a way of distributing news content from a single source across the internet often as RSS or RDF format XML feeds. These feeds can then be tapped into by browsers and web sites and the information they carry can be placed on a web site using server-side scripts. As the feed provider updates the content so the content of the web page that the feed is displayed on changes with it. Research has shown that web masters hoping to make good revenues from affiliate linking on web sites achieve a great deal more by establishing a core following for their web site by providing visitors with continually updated content and therefore reasons to keep returning. So we've established that we need these feeds but what do the terms RSS and XML mean?

SWPAP webmaster page for XML/RSS
The SWPAP calendar collects XML from SWPAP member web sites and combines it into a database that is then displayed with SWPAP member events in chronological order. In order for an organization's XML to work in the calendar, it must be validated RSS 2.0, and further conform to specific use of the fields in that RSS spec. To test how well your XML would display on the SWPAP site, you can go here (note that this a more specific test than the one found at an RSS validator; however you may want to use an RSS validator which gives helpful comments on failures if you are having any difficulty with your code).

Netscape had one of the first "portals" on the Web, a place where users could go to get most of their information needs fulfilled: search engines, news, email, and more. But Netscape soon wanted a portal that was more customizable by the user and contained content from any site that wanted to contribute. Hence My Netscape Network (MNN) was born.

Something new in the announcement of TeamPage, Traction Software emphasizes the RSS integration. They implemented RSS 2.0 and popular XML-RPC standards for data input/output. That makes sense, this way users aren’t restricted to use only the TeamPage GUI for their daily work with the system.

Web Services, RSS and Sun Bloggers
Still, despite wide consensus, the technologies usually associated with Web services are not actually standards or recommendations of any open standards organization. To the surprise of many, Web services are not just about SOAP and things that start with WS-*, as some vendors would like you to believe. Some of the most widespread Web services today — for instance, those in use by the fast-growing Web-logging ('blogging') community — are based on other technologies like RSS and XML-RPC.
