A Schema is a group of classes with a single owner. Schemas are used for administration and class naming. Class names must be unique within their owning schemas. Each class name includes the schema name and follows this format:

The following small example shows how DSD can be used to describe the schema of XML-based book data bases.

The third section provides the actual definitions of the schema's elements and
types.

The extractor takes a Web page as input and outputs data extracted from the input Web page. The extractor is an emulator of a finite-state transducer.

While DTDs have been a reliable mechanism for defining markup, they come with a host of limitations and peculiarities, especially when a developer wants to utilize SOAP and other XML technologies.
