SMIL Layout
When you stream more than one clip, you use SMIL to lay out the presentation. The layout defines where each clip appears in the RealOne Player media playback pane. Clips might appear side-by- side, for example, or stacked on top of each other. This chapter introduces you to SMIL's basic layout features. Before you create a layout, be sure to read "SMIL File Basics".

Color Values
Most markup, such as RealText and RealPix, can use color names and hexadecimal values for color attributes. SMIL 2.0 supports the color values defined in the Cascading Style Sheets 2 (CSS2) specification, letting you use RGB values as well.

Embedding QuickTime Movies and SMIL in a Web Page
To present QuickTime movies synchronized with captions, or QuickTime-friendly SMIL documents on the Web, you can simply put a link to the media source. However, by applying the <object> and <embed> tags, you can provide more advanced features for user interface control on the presentation.

SMIL
Different SMIL players are available. To view the examples contained in this tutorial, you'll need the G2 Player from RealNetworks. The free version of the software will suffice for our movies. You'll also need WinZip to unzip the SMIL clip prior to playing it. Download and install the G2 on your PC (no Mac version is available yet). Once you have it installed, read more information about playing the accessible SMIL clip.

SMIL Boston Animation
This is a working draft of a specification of animation functionality for XML documents. It is part of work in the Synchronized Multimedia Working Group (SYMM) towards a next version of the SMIL language and modules. It describes an animation framework as well as a set of base XML animation elements, included in SMIL and suitable for integration with other XML documents.

The SMIL Content Control
This Section defines the SMIL content control module. This module contains elements and attributes which provide for runtime content choices and optimized content delivery. Since these elements and attributes are defined in a module, designers of other markup languages can reuse the functionality in the SMIL content control module when they need to include media content control in their language.

Using SMIL Infill Templates to Invite in Media Specialists
The theme of xmlconference2003 is "Now We're Cooking!", symbolizing the many stakeholders in the business of developing and helping individuals learn to use XML and related systems such as SMIL for multimedia presentations. The emphasis in this presentation is to invite into the kitchen more media specialists, developers, and trainers who want to reach the widest feasible range of users. While WYSIWYGs are efficient for some tasks, real control comes only with direct coding.

Playing Clips in a Web Page
Embedding a presentation in a Web page provides seamless playback without launching RealPlayer as a separate application. You can even include RealPlayer controls such as fast forward and pause. This chapter explains how you add mark-up to a Web page so that people view your RealSystem presentation directly through their Web browsers.
