Say you're a salesperson, and you need to check some vital statistics about your inventory. If you're at home or in the office, you simply fire up your browser and link to your firm's Web site or intranet. But what if you're on your way to a meeting with an important client? Soon, you'll be able to access all the information you need over a cell phone or PDA (personal digital assistant) using WML (Wireless Markup Language).

Working on a website for my company, I discovered the need for wireless access to my email, stocks and such. Not wanting to pay someone else to give me this information, I decided to develop a wireless site. The information to do this is available on the internet, but it is scattered and hard to come across.

WAP/WML templates require a php Content-Type header to be passed along with the template. The easist way to do this would be to write a custom function that prints the header. If you are using caching, that won't work so we'll do it using the insert tag (remember insert tags are not cached!) Be sure that there is nothing output to the browser before the template, or else the header may fail.

While XHTML MP enables the creation of visually appealing pages, developers with a background in WML or HDML will find that some of the features available in those mark-ups are no longer available. Because of this, migrating from WML/HDML to XHTML cannot be automated and a more reliable and functioning application will result from doing it manually with the help of the information presented here. Here you can grab the tarballs of complete distributions containing major releases. Not all interim releases are archived, only the initial release of a revision (patchlevel 0) and the latest release on this revision (highest patchlevel) are kept. For all other releases first grab a tarball and then apply one or more of the patch files.

The UP.Link platform, shown in Figure 1-1 below, provides subscribers with secure, wireless access to a wide array of Internet and other network services using data-capable wireless phones or personal digital assistants (PDAs). For the purposes of this documentation, these specially-enabled handheld devices are called UP.Phones.

The phone and browser being simulated are composites of the most common characteristics of the phones that most people use. This phone doesn't map directly to any particular manufacturer, but is somewhat of a "lowest common denominator" combination between Nokia and ATT&T phones.
