Xtreme Accounting -- It's Coming
Time to learn another acronym. Later this month a new version of xBRL, a subset of the XML Internet language intended to standardize how financial data is shared among Web-based applications, will be released. Leading makers of accounting software say they will incorporate xBRL-tagging capabilities into their products by the end of the year. This will go a long way toward transforming xBRL from a promising concept to a useful reality, but experts caution it will be several years before the code reaches its full potential. Until then, companies that want to exchange and analyze financial data over the Internet must continue to rekey or repackage much of it.

XBRL: XML, XLink, and the Revolution in Corporate Reporting
This year's debacles in financial disclosures have demonstrated the urgent need for better ways for companies to report results to investors and other stakeholders. Using XML data tags to describe financial information for public and private companies and other organizations, XBRL transforms corporate reporting from a paper-oriented publishing model into an Internet broadcasting model, providing significant benefits to all participants. This talk will describe for an XML-savvy audience a significant pilot project by NASDAQ, Microsoft and PricewaterhouseCoopers, and will cover in depth several significant XBRL announcements by government agencies, exchanges, and Fortune 500 companies, all scheduled for mid November.

How extensible reporting language will change your business

In doing so we highlighted two major implications XBRL will have on corporate reporting. Firstly that XBRL will become essential to corporate reporting, and secondly that it will likely reduce the importance of the format of published corporate information. In this article we examine these two implications in greater depth.

XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language)

XML, XBRL, and The Future of Business and Business Reporting
Dr. Weber, the Editor in Chief of MIS Quarterly, comments on potential impact of XML and XBRL on businesses, investors, regulators and researchers. I hope that I have given some sense of the potential impact that XML and XBRL will have on the way businesses might operate, the ways they might report, and the ways that trust and assurance services might evolve.? The papers that follow delve more deeply into the issues I have raised.? They also canvass other issues that I have not addressed.? All highlight the rich array of opportunities that now confront us as practitioners and researchers.

USING XBRL FOR DATA REPORTING
Over the years, a number of different mechanisms for exchanging data have been developed. Until the Internet and Extensible Markup Language (XML) these mechanisms tended to be proprietary or unique to the application or purpose for which each was created. eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) is one of the many industry specif ic 'languages' of XML. XBRL hailed as 'the digital language of business' facilitates the reuse of information contained in business reports, providing structure and context for that information.
