Time to learn another acronym. Later this month a new version of xBRL, a subset of the XML Internet language intended to standardize how financial data is shared among Web-based applications, will be released. Leading makers of accounting software say they will incorporate xBRL-tagging capabilities into their products by the end of the year. This will go a long way toward transforming xBRL from a promising concept to a useful reality, but experts caution it will be several years before the code reaches its full potential. Until then, companies that want to exchange and analyze financial data over the Internet must continue to rekey or repackage much of it.

This year's debacles in financial disclosures have demonstrated the urgent need for better ways for companies to report results to investors and other stakeholders. Using XML data tags to describe financial information for public and private companies and other organizations, XBRL transforms corporate reporting from a paper-oriented publishing model into an Internet broadcasting model, providing significant benefits to all participants. This talk will describe for an XML-savvy audience a significant pilot project by NASDAQ, Microsoft and PricewaterhouseCoopers, and will cover in depth several significant XBRL announcements by government agencies, exchanges, and Fortune 500 companies, all scheduled for mid November.

In last month's edition of CIO, we kicked off our 'The Intelligent Real-Time Enterprise' series and briefly discussed extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). The adoption of the recently developed Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) got a significant boost Tuesday, with the Nasdaq Stock Market, Microsoft and PricewaterhouseCoopers teaming up to show off the new platform for corporate reporting over the Internet.

This financial statement is a demonstration of XML based financial statements prepared to the XBRL specification. These are NOT the official financial statements of Great Plains and should NOT be used for financial analysis. The release last month of an International Accounting Standards (IAC)-compliant version of the XBRL (for eXtensible Business Reporting Language) schema for business reporting appears to opened the door for increased interoperability with other schemas for managing market data and research. The new XBRL schema has been welcomed by working groups such as MDDL (Market Data Definition Language) and RIXML (Research Information eXtensible Markup Language), paving the way for a unified approach for managing three cornerstone information types using XML.
