XForms recently reached the W3C's Candidate Recommendation status—and you need to know about it—because XForms isn't a form description language, it's a language for describing applications in a platform-independent way. Best of all, it integrates easily with technologies you already know, such as XHTML, XPath, SVG, and CSS.

The W3C XForms Working Group has published a new Working Draft of XForms 1.0 that "incorporates new material agreed upon at the Boston face to face meeting, including the adoption of XML Schema to replace XForms Simple Syntax, as well as initial efforts at modularizing XForms and additional feedback from outside sources. XForms are the W3C's response to demands from Web applications and eCommerce solutions, which require Web forms with richer interactions.

If you browse the Web at all, you probably use forms more often than you realize. Nearly all on-line interaction (as opposed to static text delivery) takes place through some kind of form. To enhance the use of forms on the Web, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sponsored the development of XForms.

XForms is an XML application that represents the next generation of Forms for the Web. By splitting traditional XHTML forms into three parts - data model, instance data, and user interface - it separates presentation from content, allows reuse, gives strong typing - reducing the number of round-trips to the server, as well as offering device independence and a reduced need for scripting.

HTML forms lack a number of features common in software used in database and workflow applications. These are applications where an on-line document or form is passed from office to office, for example, an invoice or purchase order.

Understandably, authors will often desire greater control over exact construction of the submitted instance data. One common case might be submitting to a server XML data that is validated against a predefined DTD or XML Schema.

The purpose of this tutorial is to show how a simple XForms form can be authored, as well as to introduce some of the basic concepts of XForms.

This Working Draft is a pre-version the Candidate Recommendation document. Its goal is to show the work on disposition of comments and allow authors of the Last Call comments to review the current XForms specification before we advance to Candidate Recommendation. The two weeks review will close on 4 September 2002.
