XSLT Programmer's Reference
By: Dr. Michael Kay. For programmers who want to learn how to use the XSLT language for developing web applications. The book is in four parts: a detailed introduction to the concepts of the language, a reference section giving comprehensive specifications and working examples of every feature, a development guide giving design advice and case studies for the advanced user, and a product reference detailing the features and usage of the latest versions of Microsoft MSXML, Apache Xalan, Oracle XML, open source Saxon, the TRAX API and other processors and tools. Download Chapter 1: "XSLT in Context" for free in a printable PDF format.

The W3C XSL Working Group has published the second working draft of Extensible Stylesheet Language (
The W3C XSL Working Group has published the second working draft of Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) Version 1.1. Despite the more generic name, this actually only covers XSL Formatting Objects, not XSL Transformations.

Would you like to see XSLT1.1 + EXSLT in .NET2
Hey, I've got another idea. XQuery and XSLT2 are surely huge undertakings (we can truly thank W3C for that), but still there is plenty of plain poor .NET devs struggling with limitations of XSLT 1.0 and XPath 1.0. What if Microsoft implements XSLT 1.1 + EXSLT in .NET 2.0, would you like to see it?

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures Articulates Business Benefits of XSLT 2.0
According to a new analysis report from InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) XSLT 2.0 (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) specification demonstrates the tangible benefits of a corporate and IT investment in XML (Extensible Markup Language). Titled "A Focus on XSLT 2.0: Understanding the Development and Business Benefits," the report discusses XSLT 2.0's ability to substantially reduce code complexity and streamline development while simultaneously allowing developers to increase the capabilities of XML transformations.

P & P Software has released XSLTdoc 1.0, a free-as-in-speech (GPL) Javadoc-like tool for XSLT styles
P & P Software has released XSLTdoc 1.0, a free-as-in-speech (GPL) Javadoc-like tool for XSLT stylesheets. Instead of using comments, it uses elements in the http://www.pnp-software.com/XSLTdoc namespace. These are top-level elements that appear before each documented top-level XSLT element. The processor is itself implemented in XSLT 2.0. The XSLT stylesheets are not complete onto themselves. A config file is also required, though mostly this just replaces what would be provided by command line arguments in javadoc. However, truly JavaDoc like documentation should be able to generated purely from the XSLT stylesheets themselves, without any extra files needing to be consulted.

An Introduction to Client-Side XSLT: It's Not Just for Server Geeks Anymore
Learning XML by itself is a bit like learning Latin. You memorize the vocabulary and some grammatical rules, but it’s not really useful until you are provided with some context and can actually apply it (in medical school, for example).

DataSet to HTML via XSLT
This sample application shows how to load a DataSet with records from two tables in a SQL Server database, create relationships between the tables within the DataSet, and then use the Nested property so that the resulting XML structure is nested in a hierarchical manner. The resulting nested XML structure is then transformed to HTML using an XSLT stylesheet.

Fifth anniversary of the XSLT and XPath
Here are some 5-years old news: http://www.w3.org/ -- 16 November 1999 -- The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) today releases two specifications, XSL Transformations (XSLT) and XML Path Language (XPath), as W3C Recommendations. These new specifications represent cross-industry and expert community agreement on technologies that will enable the transformation and styled presentation of XML documents. A W3C Recommendation indicates that a specification is stable, contributes to Web interoperability, and has been reviewed by the W3C membership, who favor its adoption by the industry.

So Do People use XSL in the Browser Yet?
I was talking with George Feil the other day and he said something I thought was very interesting. "You know," he said, "when you're dealing with Enterprise Apps, there's no reason to generate HTML on the server. You should generate XML, and then use XSLT or CSS in the browser, right? Surely browsers are close enough to standards, anbd far enough along that, at this point, if you insist on a recent browser, it should work."

Automated Tree Drawing: XSLT and SVG
Trees are a very basic abstraction used in many computer science areas, including XML. If you're writing a document about tree structures you'll often want to show trees as graphics. This is not a problem for a few trees as they can be hand drawn in some graphics editor. But if you need dozens of trees, you would do well to use a compact text syntax for describing trees that can later be turned into nice pictures. In this article I'll show you how to parse simple text notation by means of XSLT and turn it into SVG graphics.

A Dynamic XSL Transformation
What do you do when you need to transform an XML file but will not know the exact structure of the XML file? This article will demonstrate a method for performing a transformation on an XML where the nodes of the document could vary.
