XUL Defines New User Interface Options
XUL is a new Netscape/Mozilla XML dialect that describes the elements of a traditional user interface. Faster and cleaner than HTML, it might just be the quickest way yet to code a UI.

XUL and Firebird
Now that we've made all of our interface and preferences changes that we can through the browser interface, we can close the browser and start hacking the code. Once you've closed Firebird, browse to the main MozillaFirebird directory and open the subdirectory "chrome". The chrome directory is where Firebird stores all of its JAR files. In these JAR files are packaged all of the XUL, JS, CSS and image files necessary for defining the browser interface, its various elements and how they look and behave. In this tutorial, we will be working exclusively with the browser.jar file.

XUL Developer Central
Netscape used XML to create XUL (the XML-based User Interface Language), a markup language for defining the objects and layout of an application user interface, across platforms and devices, using web standards. Now Netscape is also home to the XUL Developer Central site, which offers tools, documentation, tutorials, code samples, a newsgroup, FAQs, demos, technical articles and news related to the language.

XUL Template Primer
This document is a brief tech note intended to introduce XUL templates to someone new to the subject. It describes the extended XUL template syntax using a simple example. XUL templates are a way of embedding "live data" into a XUL document. A XUL template is a collection of rules that is used to build XUL and HTML content from one or more RDF datasources. A template specifies a "cookie cutter" content model pattern, along with the conditions indicate when the pattern should apply.

Widgets and Controls
This section outlines the various widgets and controls that are defined in XUL. It does not attempt to cover the basic layout containers (box, stack, grid and popup), nor does it attempt to cover the specialized document root containers (window, wizard, dialog, page and overlay). Layout is covered in section 2, and the root elements are covered in section 4.

XUL: Microsoft's worst nightmare?
Netscape's army of open-source programmers may not have turned the tide in the browser wars, but that hasn't stopped some followers from moving on to the next front in the battle for control of the Internet.

An Introductory Tour of Mozilla's XUL
XUL is an XML-based technology for expressing the GUI part of a software application. It has been used to express GUIs for applications as diverse as web browsers, email clients, calendars, calculators, spreadsheet editors, HTML editors, debuggers, and whole desktop environments. The free Mozilla platform—that is, the executable engine and libraries that accompany every Mozilla-based product—provides a fully-featured implementation of XUL. This article is a quick look at the main tags that Mozilla's XUL provides. Mozilla is also the name of the applications that will pick up where Netscape's products have stopped. It's a name worth getting used to.

XUL reference
XUL Reference presents a clickable list of the XML-based User Interface Language (XUL) elements and attributes. Clicking an item presents a page with a description, examples, syntax and usage information. For each example the user can view a source XUL document, a relevant Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) file and real XUL output. Using the Reference requires a Mozilla-based browser. XUL Reference is distributed under the GNU Free Documentation License, and may be freely used or distributed if Zvon.org is credited and linked to from the user's web site.

This document expands on the XUL Template Primer by illustrating how templates can recursively generate nested content. To illustrate how nested content is generated, we'll examine this XUL document, which builds a simple content model from an RDF/XML file.

Making XUL Localizable
In the past, UI (display) related resource descriptions are stored in *.rc (for Windows client) or *.ad (for UNIX client) so that they can be localized for a specific language or culture. In the new world, Mozilla 5.0, this is not true any more. Most of the windows and dialogs in Mozilla will be described using XUL.
